013 School for the Maya Tz'utujil Community, San Pedro de la Laguna, Guatemala
Volunteer work with NGO Esperanza ( Nicola Luxen )
Architect in Solola: Luis Alberto Palacios
Client: Colegio CECOTZ
We built the first prototype module that will be used as an example for the rest of school. Due to the frequent earthquakes in the region, the module was designed to satisfy the seismic regulations. It is a compact square and it has 2 levels. The ground floor level is made of specifically designed adobe brick reinforced with bamboo bars. The bamboo upper level is a very light and flexible structure. The earth-bamboo slab is supported by fish-trusses and tied together with a concrete ring beam.
